The White Russian is a cocktail that was born out of a slightly awkward family reunion. Its older, more serious cousin, the Black Russian, first appeared in Brussels in the late 1940s, a simple mix of vodka and coffee liqueur. But as the 1960s rolled around, someone decided to add cream to the party. It wasn't until the 1998 movie The Big Lebowski that the White Russian truly became a legend.
It was drunk before the cream settled; the bartender said he'd rushed it, and made another.
