The elder statesman of cocktails. The Old Fashioned is said to be one of the very first drinks to be called a cocktail — in the early 1800s a cocktail simply meant spirits, sugar, water and bitters. As newer drinks arrived, people started asking for one made the old-fashioned way. The name stuck.
Nathan asked for the recipe; the bartender answered in four words and left it there.
